Originally, Bennett was named Kiowa after nearby Kiowa Creek. On May 21, 1878 the creek flooded causing a railroad bridge to collapse. When the bridge collapsed a freight train headed east out of Denver was on the bridge. The train was lost adn the engineer and fireman on board lost their lives. As a result of this fatal accident the town was renamed Bennett in honor of widows who were both sisters, adn daughters of H.P. Bennett. Mr. Bennett was the postmaster of Denver from 1877 to 1907.
Bennett became incorporated in 1929. The property on the north side of the tracks carried the stipulation that no liquor be sold. Even today, there are no liquor stores on the north side of the railroad tracks.
